About Easy Pinyin
Easy Pinyin is a free website to learn Mandarin Chinese pronunciation by speaking, not just by reading.
Why we built it
Most beginners learn pinyin by reading charts. But pronunciation is a physical skill: you only get it right by saying the sounds out loud and getting feedback. Easy Pinyin listens to you, tells you which syllable was off, and explains each sound with comparisons to your own language. A French speaker and an English speaker don't make the same mistakes, so the tips are written separately for each language.
What you can do here
- The pronunciation trainer: read a word, say it into your microphone and get feedback on every syllable.
- The pinyin chart: all Mandarin syllables with audio for each tone, and a full lesson for each syllable.
- The four tones, with pitch curves and the tone change rules.
- The HSK 1 module: the 150 words of the first exam level, with spaced review, stroke-by-stroke writing, speaking practice, common traps and a mock exam.
- The character map: 500 frequent characters linked by the signs they share and the sounds they have in common.
- Guides written to help you learn faster.
How it works
Speech recognition is provided by your browser (Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge). The audio examples use the Chinese voice installed on your device. You don't need an account: your progress is saved in your own browser and never sent to us.
Sources and credits
- Example words and some definitions come from CC-CEDICT, licensed under Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0.
- Stroke order animations use Hanzi Writer and the Make Me a Hanzi data.
- Pinyin conversion uses the open-source pinyin-pro library. Character frequency comes from Jun Da's frequency list.
- Pronunciation tips, explanations, translations and the HSK 1 traps are written by us, and the meanings of the 500 map characters were checked by hand.
Who we are
Easy Pinyin is an independent project made in France by a language enthusiast who is learning Chinese too. We read every message, and many improvements to the site come from learners' feedback.
