What is the HSK 1?
The HSK (汉语水平考试) is the official Chinese proficiency test. HSK 1 is the first level: it checks that you understand and use 150 basic words and very simple sentences.
How is the HSK 1 exam organized?
40 questions in about 40 minutes: 20 listening questions and 20 reading questions. It's scored out of 200 and you need 120 to pass.
How long does it take to learn the 150 HSK 1 words?
With 10 to 15 minutes a day, most learners know them in 4 to 8 weeks. Spaced review brings each word back right before you'd forget it.
Do I need to write characters for HSK 1?
No, the HSK 1 exam has no writing section. Writing the characters still helps a lot to recognize them, which is why the exercises include it.
